Dutch farmers are increasingly turning to the Paulownia tree — also known as Kiri wood — for its fast growth, high timber yield, and the extra income it generates through verified CO₂ certificates. Unlike traditional crops, Paulownia can be harvested after just 8 to 10 years, and the tree regrows straight from the stump, offering farmers a low-maintenance, long-term source of both timber and carbon income.

Former fruit grower Eric Litjens is one of them. In this short documentary, he explains why he left traditional fruit farming behind to grow Paulownia trees instead. Rising climate risks, market pressure, and growing uncertainty in agriculture pushed him to look for a more regenerative and future-proof alternative — and he found it in this fast-growing species.

A key part of Eric’s transition is his collaboration with Oncra, which helps finance regenerative projects through verified CO₂ certificates. By measuring and validating carbon sequestration, farmers like Eric can build additional income streams while contributing to climate restoration and long-term soil health.

Beyond carbon, the Paulownia tree supports biodiversity, thrives on poor soil, and opens up opportunities for sustainable timber and bio-based building materials.
