Somewhere off the coast of Mexico, a vessel moves slowly through open water. It’s not fishing. It’s not surveying. It’s hunting seaweed. Why? To take carbon out of the atmosphere, while buying fragile coastlines a little more time. That vessel is the latest chapter in a story that started 25 years ago, underwater. A career…
Ten days before the start, I stumbled across an extraordinary initiative: the Glorious Glacier Ride. A group of passionate athletes cycling from Munich to Monaco, 1,600 km and 35,000 meters of climbing, all in just two weeks. Their mission? To raise awareness for our rapidly melting glaciers and funds for carbon-sinking projects like soil regeneration…
On the final day of the Double Nature Summit – May 25 – we gathered in Amsterdam with entrepreneurs, scientists, philanthropists, policy makers, civil servants, funders, people with indigenous perspectives, NGOs, and civil society to weave all the insights together. We explored the idea of humanity as a keystone species in a stewarding role, equipping…
Investors, policy makers, companies and scientists present plan to restore CO2 balance May 25, the Double Nature Plan was presented at the Double Nature Summit in the Netherlands, a four-day event that has brought together a wide range of stakeholders. The plan sets out a number of actions for the sequestration of CO2 from the atmosphere by…

Join our monthly Double Nature Talk featuring seaweed legend Brian von Herzen, who was recently awarded the $1M XPRIZE for his ground-breaking carbon removal project. We’re very curious to see how his Climate Foundation will be scaling up carbon removal using ocean-based solutions. Reef Ranger Amber Stapert is also joining to tell about restoring coral…
In December 2021, the European Commission adopted the Communication “Sustainable Carbon Cycles” which sets out an action plan on how to develop sustainable solutions to increase carbon removals. Climate Cleanup with ecosystem partners ASN Bank, Gideon Building Tribes and others advised the Commission on this carbon removal certification framework. This advise can be found here….
Which natural climate solutions are scalable? And how can we accelerate? Wednesday September 1 we kick off a new series of Double Nature Talks live at Tolhuistuin with this most pressing question. How will we remove 1500 gigaton by doubling nature? Mimicking nature, we consider our systemic interventions as mycelium inoculating a growth medium. We…
Thanks everyone for joining our festive online masterclass on May 26 on scalable climate solutions like seaweed, soil, regenerative (agro)forestry, circulair biobased materials, ONCRA and enhanced weathering. Take a look at the recording on our YouTubeChannel. Happy we had Paul Hawken (Drawdown / Regeneration), Damon Gameau (filmmaker 2040 Join the Regeneration), Matthea de Jong

Student and entrepreneur Marcel Kempers made an agile start of this decade, working with his companies on seaweed (Reef Support) and biochar (Pyro Power). At our Double Nature Talk of February 10 Marcel and his collegues elaborated on the latter one: regenerating soil using biochar. An ancient method used for centuries by indigenous people in…
One of our pioneer members is Bram Geers (33), also known as Azolla Bram. Raised in and around greenhouses with all kinds of cactusses (!) in the Westland in the Netherlands, Bram decided to study
How to turn a huge problem into a climate solution? On January 13 2021 we presented an update on our Sargassum Cleanup project during our Double Nature Talk at 8 pm CET. Around 40 people attended. In the last decade Sargassum Seaweed has become a plague in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean and Gulf of…
It seems like seaweed has almost infinite possibilities. It sequesters CO2 faster than plants and trees. A real carbon sucker and regenerator of the oceans. All kinds of value chains become more and more feasible, like BlueBlocks.
Surrounded by piers and yachts , the harbor of IJmuiden in the Netherlands hides a marvoulous shining pearl; the first seaweed farm of Nikki Spil. October 2020 she will be sowing her next batch
Two members of our Sargassum Cleanup Expedition Team, Peter Lindeman and Fons Janssen, have safely arrived on Saint Martin on Augustus 31 2020. For two weeks they’re observing the Sargassum seaweed

Finally, the time was right to tell the world about our Sargassum Cleanup project. Seaweed is potentially a super scalable climate solution with incredible benefits.
A global audience joined our cheerful Club Launch on May 27, including many who have already joined the 1500 Club. Our online launch programme featured

Our seaweed lab is growing and growing. We started growing Ulva Lactuca (sea lettuce) with one basin from Hortimare (thanks!) and we completed our lab with 6 basins this week. Together with the port of Amsterdam, we’re aiming to scale up the growth of seaweed in Dutch waters and abroad. The Climate Cleanup Capacity of…

It’s no joke. Today we launch, in public beta, CO2 Open. An open invitation to entrepreneurs (companies, organisations) and initiatives that remove CO2 with nature-inspired methods to come together. Our first collective action is to secure funding from the Dutch government (SDE++, klimaat enveloppe). Next we will open up towards a global scale, as the…

Together with Port of Amsterdam CEO Koen Overtoom (left), today we opened the Climate Cleanup Expo. Our ‘museum of the future’ in Prodock, the innovation hub of the port of Amsterdam, shows all kinds of natural Climate Cleanup methods like olivine, seaweed and trees-growing methods.
