We’re excited to announce a bold step forward for the timber construction industry: DERIX Group, one of the leading suppliers for the timber construction industry, has officially entered the world of emissions trading. Working with Oncra, our open framework for bio-based carbon removal, DERIX is now having CO₂ certificates created for considerable amounts of CO₂ that is stored in their timber components. This move shows the entire timber industry that climate protection can also create economic value.

Starting with the airship hangar, later on the entire mass timber production
The airship hangar in Mülheim marks the beginning of the CO₂ certification process at DERIX. The DERIX timber construction of this building stores 1,169 tons of CO₂. For this, Oncra created 1,169 Carbon Credits, which the DERIX Group can now trade.

But this is just the start. DERIX plans to certify its entire mass timber production going forward. “As Europe’s emission trading system expands to include buildings and road traffic by 2027, and with concepts to integrate Carbon Removal Credits emerging as early as 2026, the value and demand for certified carbon storage will only grow,” explains Markus Steppler, Managing Director at DERIX Group. “Economic incentives like these are essential to making production truly climate-friendly and circular, which is urgent if Europe is to meet its climate goals.”

The new norm for construction
This milestone marks a turning point: carbon stored in circular timber buildings can now deliver real financial returns for developers, builders, and property owners, on top of the environmental benefits. What was once only climate ambition is now becoming economic practice. And it is becoming the new norm.

This is not the future; it’s already happening. As Onno Dwars, Director at Ballast Nedam, puts it: “We are bringing the future forward.”
