Last week, our Construction Stored Carbon lead Sacha was in Brussels to attend the EU Expert Group on Carbon Removals. Under the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation, the EU will enforce certification methodologies for permanent carbon removals (1), carbon farming (2) and carbon storage in (building) products (3). These methodologies are developed in collaboration with the Expert Group.
While the methodologies for permanent removals (definitive) and carbon farming (draft, feedback can be submitted until 19-2) are now published, carbon storage in products is expected in Q3 2026. Sacha provided feedback on the Technical Assessment Paper that forms the foundation for that final methodology. Much of the Expert Group discussion revolved around value cases for certified carbon storage in buildings, such as inclusion in Net Zero targets for GHG emissions accounting, and building labeling similar to energy performance certificates.
We are proud to contribute to the CRCF process and are confident that a workable methodology will be published this year, along with clear pathways for European actors to value carbon storage!
