We are happy that Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), the removal and storage of CO₂ from air and oceans, is gaining increasing global attention, and recently also in the Netherlands. The Ministry of Climate and Green Growth of Sophie Hermans recently presented a comprehensive National Roadmap, while Province Gelderland conducted a market surveywith other provinces, carried out by New Economy. Climate Cleanup gave input to mainly the market survey, which introduces the distinction between grey and green carbon dioxide removal.

These developments are necessary for the climate as well as offering solutions to urgent policy challenges such as nitrogen and water quality. Provided Dutch governments make the right choices now, carbon sequestration before 2050 could generate a social value of at least 429 billion euros. At the Climate Cleanup Conference we aim to further a national carbon removal programm based on both the roadmap and market exploration.
