Bamboo Village Uganda develops several bamboo afforestation projects in Uganda. Bamboo acts as a natural carbon sink: it removes CO2 emitted from the atmosphere and stores it in the soil and the plant. The benefits of Bamboo Village Uganda’s project extend beyond environmental impact. The project actively invests in the local community and generates a range of social co-benefits to ensure that carbon finance delivers equitable development benefits in regions least responsible for, yet most affected by, climate change.

Working with local communities

Bamboo Village Uganda creates local employment opportunities -particularly for marginalized women- in both field operations and management roles, especially in rural areas of Uganda where formal employment opportunities are limited.Everything from preparing the land, nursery and planting the bamboo, to maintaining the plantation and harvesting, is done by local people. To protect the soil most work is done manually instead of using heavy machinery.

Investing in education

Beyond creating direct employment, Bamboo Village Uganda has invested in social infrastructure of two schools that currently provide education to 460 children in Kibale and 300 children in Masaka, with local female teachers in front of the classroom.

Moverover, in partnership with the local school located next to their bamboo plantation in Masaka, a small agroforestry project has been established in the school’s garden. Together, a variety of fruit trees and crops have been planted, including mango, coffee, oranges, jackfruit, and pineapple. All harvested fruit is exclusively reserved for the nutritional needs of the school’s children and teachers.

The Bamboo Village Uganda project

The vision of Bamboo Village is to use the harvested bamboo to develop housing solutions for both local residents and short-stay tourists in Kibale and Masaka. All structures within the villages, including community centers, public spaces, and furniture will be crafted from bamboo, showcasing the material’s versatility. The bamboo villages will be linked to a popular tourist route in Uganda.

The anticipated growth in tourism driven by the Bamboo Village is expected to generate spillover benefits, such as increased demand for local hospitality and food services, artisanal products, and transportation, thereby stimulating broader economic development in the region.
